What Kind Of Church Are we?

Our Mission Statement

The Mission of Sovereign Grace Church is to glorify God through the proclamation and demonstration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our goal is to see each member equipped in sound doctrine, growing in godly character, developing authentic relationships, and involved in practical service. Our mission is being accomplished through participation in our Sunday Celebration, Care Groups, and Ministry Teams, as well as our involvement with an extra-local apostolic ministry known as Sovereign Grace Ministries.

If you're familiar with some of the broad-brushed religious terms used to describe church beliefs, perhaps the following description will make sense to you:

"We are an evangelical church and describe our doctrine as being essentially Reformed, yet including a commitment to charismatic practice as Biblically defined."

For those unfamiliar with these terms, see the definitions below:

What is our denominational affiliation?

The simplest answer is...we have none. SGC is not affiliated with any of the well-known denominations (Baptists, Methodists, Lutheran, etc.). But we're not an independent church, either. We believe it's biblical and healthy for local churches to be under authority, for local pastoral teams to be accountable and answerable to leaders beyond themselves. Our church is committed to a number of related-churches throughout the US and several other nations. These churches are cared for by a ministry known as Sovereign Grace Ministries, led by CJ Mahaney.

Perhaps the easiest way to describe our relationship with the Sovereign Grace leadership team would be to imagine the kind of relationships that existed in New Testament times between the apostle Paul, Titus, and Timothy and the local churches they established and cared for.

What the big words mean

  • EVANGELICAL - Refers to churches committed to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed in the New Testament.
  • REFORMED THEOLOGY - Refers to a biblically-based system of theology developed by the great reformers such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, and the Puritans.  We've added the word "essentially", because we differ with some elements of traditional reformed theology. For more information on what we mean by "Essentially reformed", please view this pdf outline from a message presented by Jeff Purswell, Dean of the Sovereign Grace Ministries Pastor's College.
  • CHARISMATIC - The belief that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are still operational in the church today, that they did not cease in the first century after the apostles passed away.
